Dorothy McNutty in music note dress from After the Thin Man |
|
This costume is interesting, because it's not just one costume, but an entire set of them. For Dorothy McNutty's performance in After the Thin Man, a black dress with white music notes was created. To offset her performance, her chorus girls were bedecked in the same dress with the opposite colour scheme of black music notes on white. A lobby card for After the Thin Man shows the chorus girl dresses in much greater detail, and wrongly depicts them as yellow. While Dorothy McNutty's dress did not go on to be used again, the chorus girl dresses did see usage again over fifteen years later (the possibility that they were used in several films in between this time is very high) in Singin' in the Rain, during the musical number "Beautiful Girl."
